TMJ Symptoms Along With Its Causes And How It Can Be Treated
Temporomandibular joint disease is a condition wherein the joint that is responsible for connecting the skull to the jaw becomes inflamed. It causes difficulty in opening the mouth and moving the jaw. It is also often painful for them to do such. It also causes headaches, nausea and sometimes, infection of the mouth.
Treating this condition comes in many ways. Granting that it is caught early, the swelling can be corrected with jaw exercises or the use of a nighttime biofeedback headband. If the condition has progressed however, a long term treatment or an operation is needed. As this is the case, it is imperative for you to know TMJ symptoms in order for you to avoid costly treatment.
There are many TMJ symptoms but the thing is, not all of them may be present to a sufferer. The indications vary from patient to patient since the condition can be caused by many things. A dental problem can cause the joint to swell acutely. Having unaligned teeth may cause your jaw to contract abnormally, causing more pressure to the jaw when it is opened and closed. Lacking an overbite may also cause the syndrome.
The joint may also be swollen by using the jaw excessively. If one chews gum excessively, he or she may experience temporomandibular joint disease. Bruxism, the clenching of one's teeth unconsciously during his or her sleep, also stresses the jaw. Getting the jaw injured, or 'trauma', may be the cause for one's joint to get swollen.
TMJ symptoms include: difficulty in biting or chewing, clicking or popping noises when opening or closing the mouth, earaches and headaches in the morning, hearing loss, migraines, pain in the jaw and reduced ability to open or close the mouth. If you are suffering from this, you may also suffer Tinnitus. This is the hearing of sound absent an external source.
If you are experiencing any of this, it's best to see a doctor soon. A dentist can also treat the condition especially if the cause comes from a dental problem. As mentioned, being able to have this condition diagnosed early is very important as it can spell the difference between a short-term treatment and a long-term one.
